This Is Why We Should All Be Vegetarians
The world’s population is growing at an unsustainable rate and our demand for meat is a major contributor to this. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization has estimated that the meat industry is responsible for 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, while other studies put this figure as high as 51%. That’s more than the entire transportation sector!
The way we produce meat is also incredibly inefficient. It takes 8,000-10,000 litres of water to produce just 1kg of beef, and growing crops to feed animals takes up a huge amount of land. In fact, 70% of the Amazon rainforest has already been cleared to make way for cattle ranching.
But it’s not just the environment that suffers from our meat consumption – our health does too. A plant-based diet has been linked with lower rates of heart disease, cancer and obesity, while meat-eaters are at greater risk of these conditions.
So, if you care about the environment and your own health, the best thing you can do is to go vegetarian. It might seem like a difficult lifestyle change, but with so many delicious plant-based recipes out there, you’re sure to find something to suit your taste.
