The 5 Worst Tech Gadgets of 2018 So Far

From over-hyped products that failed to deliver to those that are just plain terrible, there have been plenty of duds in the tech world this year. Here are five of the worst tech gadgets released in 2018 so far, in no particular order.

1. Google Home Max

Google promised big things with the Home Max, its answer to the Apple HomePod. Unfortunately, it failed to deliver on many fronts. The audio quality is good but not great, it’s extremely expensive at $399, and it’s quite large, making it difficult to find a place for it in most homes. Add in the fact that it doesn’t work with as many smart home devices as the Amazon Echo and it’s hard to recommend the Google Home Max to anyone.

2. HTC Vive Focus

The HTC Vive Focus is a standalone VR headset that was supposed to be released in early 2018. However, it was delayed until later in the year and still hasn’t been released in most markets. When it finally does launch, it will be expensive at $599 and it won’t have any content available for it at launch. For now, it’s best to wait and see how this VR headset turns out before you buy one.

3. LG G7 ThinQ

The LG G7 ThinQ is the latest smartphone from the South Korean company and it’s a terrible disappointment. It’s not a bad phone per se, but it’s just not worth the high price tag of $850. The camera is good but not great, the design is uninspired, and it doesn’t offer anything that other flagship smartphones don’t already offer. If you’re looking for a new smartphone, you’re better off with just about any other option.

4. Razer Phone

The Razer Phone is a gaming smartphone that was released in late 2017. It’s a great phone for gamers with its high-end specs and large screen, but it’s not a great phone for anyone else. The screen is too large, the bezels are too thick, and the overall design is quite ugly. It’s also not a very good phone for gaming, as it doesn’t have any exclusive games and it doesn’t run games as well as other flagship smartphones.

5. Sony Xperia Ear Duo

The Sony Xperia Ear Duo is a truly terrible product. It’s a pair of wireless earbuds that are meant to be worn all day, but they’re uncomfortable, they’re not very good at staying in your ears, and the sound quality is terrible. They also cost a whopping $280, which is far too much to pay for such a subpar product. If you’re looking for a pair of wireless earbuds, there are far better options available.
