Solo travel is on the rise, with more and more people venturing out into the world by themselves. And it’s no wonder why – solo travel is an incredibly rewarding experience, giving you the freedom to explore at your own pace, make your own decisions, and really get to know a place and its people.
Of course, solo travel isn’t without its challenges – it can be daunting to step out into the unknown all by yourself. But with a little planning and preparation, you can make the most of your solo adventures and come back with some amazing stories (and maybe even a few new friends).
Here are our top tips for solo travellers:
1. Do your research
Before you set off on your solo adventure, it’s important to do your research. Decide on your destination and then spend some time reading up on the place – Lonely Planet guides are great for this. Once you have a good understanding of the lay of the land, you can start planning your trip.
2. Make a plan (but be flexible)
Once you know where you’re going, it’s time to start planning your trip. One of the great things about travelling solo is that you can do whatever you want, but it’s still a good idea to have a loose plan. Decide on the things you definitely want to see and do, and then leave some room in your itinerary for spontaneous adventures.
3. Pack light
There’s no need to take everything but the kitchen sink when you’re travelling solo – in fact, it’s better to travel light. Not only will it be easier to get around, but you’ll also have more freedom to change your plans at the last minute. So, pack a carry-on bag with everything you need for your trip and leave the rest at home.
4. Stay in touch
Even though you’re travelling solo, it’s important to stay in touch with your friends and family. Let them know your plans before you set off, and check in regularly to let them know you’re safe. There are also plenty of apps and websites that allow you to connect with other travellers, so you can meet up with new friends along the way.
5. Be prepared for anything
When you’re travelling solo, you need to be prepared for anything. From lost luggage and cancelled flights to getting sick or pickpocketed, it’s important to have a backup plan. Make sure you have travel insurance, and familiarise yourself with your policy before you go. It’s also a good idea to keep some emergency cash on hand, just in case.
6. Embrace the unknown
One of the best things about solo travel is that it forces you to step out of your comfort zone. You’ll be meeting new people, trying new things, and venturing into the unknown – so go with the flow and embrace it. Take some risks, say yes to new experiences, and go with your gut. You never know where it might take you.
7. Be cautious
While it’s important to embrace the unknown, you also need to be cautious. Solo travel can be dangerous, so it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and trust your gut. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t – so don’t be afraid to walk away or change your plans.
8. Enjoy your own company
One of the best things about solo travel is that it gives you the chance to really get to know yourself. You’ll have plenty of time to explore, think, and reflect – so use it wisely. Take some time to journal, explore your surroundings, and just be. It’s a great opportunity to get in touch with your thoughts and feelings, and you might be surprised at what you discover about yourself.
9. Make friends
Even though you’re travelling solo, that doesn’t mean you have to be alone. There are plenty of other solo travellers out there, so don’t be afraid to reach out and make new friends. There are also plenty of opportunities to meet locals – so strike up a conversation and get to know the people who live in your destination.
10. Slow down
One of the best things about solo travel is that it forces you to slow down. Without the distraction of travel companions, you can really take the time to savour your experience. Soak up your surroundings, enjoy the simple pleasures, and savour the moments – they’ll be gone before you know it.
