Amsterdam’s city centre is located south of the IJ and the central station. The oldest part of the city is the ‘Wallen’, nowadays a well-known prostitution area. Around the oldest part, the canals developed in a half-moon shape during the 17th century. On August 1st 2010, the canal system was placed on the UNESCO world heritage list. Outside this area the former blue collar neighbourhoods the Jordaan and the Pijp, can be found. Near the outer edge of the centre famous places such as the Museumplein, the Vondelpark and the Plantagebuurt with the zoo Artis, can be found.
